"Looking Glass" SOLD

12"x12" Oil on Belgian Linen Canvas

This was the result of a demo I painted for friends as a "thank you" for watching our little puppy while we traveled out of town this past summer.

"Together Again" SOLD

12"x12" Oil on Belgian Linen Canvas

painting this as a commission for some fine folks in New York who also get to enjoy these sweet little sanderlings on their beaches as well.

"Longitude Lane"

10"x8" Plein Air Oil on Linen Panel

This is the world's prettiest alley; a driveway worthy of becoming a picturesque painting.
This view is the very end of Longitude Lane where it ends as a pedestrian walkway
into Meeting Street.
I had to stand/paint in a location out of the way of those preparing for Hurricane Irma: covering windows with shutters and plywood.
As I painted, the whirrr of handsaws and hammers could be heard all around.
On a usual quiet and empty alley, cars were in and out of their garages, packing and preparing.  So I had to stay out of the way.
Luckily, the pedestrian part was pretty too.

"Moses - Raising Awareness for Homeless Vets"

10"x8" Oil on Linen Panel

I met Richard while I was painting downtown on Thursday.  He approached me and my painting friend joking that he would love to pose for a painting but he couldn't pay us; he had such great character that I had to paint his portrait!
So we made arrangements to meet up the following morning so he could sit for me and I could paint him.  He made such a fine model and I hope to paint many more like these.

While he sat for me we were able to get to know one another.
He described his days as a US Marine, his years growing up in Charleston and on his family's Summerville farm, and his time as a homeless man in Charleston.
He started the tent village near the I-26 overpass with just he and a friend, it began with two tents and grew to a small village.  He started the tent village because he wanted to help his buddy avoid the harassment experienced from some in the homeless shelter.  He fought and worked with diligence to find homes for his fellow homeless mates.  He found a home for every single one of them and thus was dubbed the name, "Moses," for he led his friends out of their bondage into their promised land.

"St Michaels Church" A quick plein air sketch

7"x5" Oil on Linen Panel

On Thursday September 7th the weather was cool and sunny and less humid.
There was nothing going to keep me away from getting outside to paint!

This is a view of Meeting Street looking down toward Broad Street (the "4 Corners").
I was near the corner of Queen and Meeting Streets.

"Discovering Together"

14"x11" Oil on Belgian Linen Panel

The sweetness that a mother's love conveys to her baby and the bond they share is so precious!
Safe in her mother's arms, I wanted to portray the connection between baby and mommy as they discover the ocean's endless-ness together.

"A Sweet, Kind Soul"

28"x22" Oil on Belgian Linen Canvas

A downtown Charleston fixture.
This man is ready with a smile and his smile lights up the room!
He truly is a sweet, kind soul.

"A Girl & Her Pony"

28"x22" Oil on Belgian Linen Canvas

This is a portrait of a young woman and her award-winning pony.  She and he have worked so hard to earn so many ribbons in so many different categories.
This young woman has been the catalyst to their winnings because she was the one to train him since she was a little girl (I want to say 6 or 7 years old).  She is now about 16 years old and has "out grown" him (she is too tall to compete with him as he is just a small pony).
So we memorialized their sweet relationship in this portrait.

"Old Village Charm" SOLD

8"x10" Plein Air Oil on Linen Panel sold

My second plein air painting of today. . . I am inlove with this little village.  The Old Village of Mount Pleasant, SC is so charming and attractive.  While my friend and I were painting a couple visiting the area approached us as they walked their Chesapeake Retriever and we made new friends!  It's the charm of this place!

"Diggin' It"

16"x20" Oil on Linen Canvas

While at the beach plein air painting a few years ago, I brought along my son to play while I worked.  He looked so cute that I paused from my painting to snap a few shots of him.  When I returned to the studio to observe my photos this one grabbed me as if to say, "Paint Me!" and so here it is.

My heart is to convey the awesomeness of life through the innocence of children at play, especially at the beach.  Don't limit me with the innocence of "children" at play; no, what makes my heart sing is the revelation of people and families and animals living life in quiet joy.  That joyful amusement speaks volumes to me and tells the story of the sweet essence of Life in the midst of turmoil and chaos.  I choose to see the beauty and the Love and the Joy of Life; which is, after all, a choice.  I want to point to It in my paintings and remind the viewer what Life is really all about.  I hope that it brings ultimate joy to you as it does to me.

Camp Merrie-Woode is an all girls summer camp which holds promise of memory-making activities and friends.  Overlooking the entire camp grounds is a granite-faced mountain named, "Old Bald."
The day in which parents drop off their campers is a very exciting one.  Parents and campers arrive in the early hours before the "Pearly Gates" open to usher the new session and wait at what is known as the "drop off site."  The iconic and gigantic Old Bald is the first to welcome you and waits along with you from across the expanse of Lake Fairfield.
This will mark my daughter's fourth session at Camp Merrie-Woode and I can say from experience that it doesn't matter how many times one has been here, the excitement of beginning a new session at Camp Merrie-Woode never lessens the feeling of great Anticipation.

Hey, I'm on YouTube!!

Hey friends,

I just returned from San Diego where I attended the 6th Annual Plein Air Conference & Expo (PACE17), a life-changing event to say the least!!

While painting in historic Old Town, unbeknownst to me, I was captured on video painting one of my plein air paintings (look for me when the scenes change from the indoor scenes to out-of-doors; I'm the one in the canvas gardening hat and grey shirt concentrating with such force smoke can be seen coming out of my ears! HA!!

This event was unbelievable and I must take some time to fully process the whole thing. The learning and net-working and bonding with other Fine Artists was top-notch all the way!

Check out this video and look fast, it's my one second of fame!!! HA!!!

"Still Life with Blue Eggs"

14"x11" Oil on Linen Panel

I found these beautiful blue chicken eggs and decided that they were meant to be painted.
This still-life had to happen sooner rather than later so these gorgeous eggs wouldn't spoil.

I may get away from it for a while and finish it up, if necessary.

Almost There. . .

24"x18" Oil on Linen Canvas, 27 1/2"x21 1/2" Framed

I've got a few finishing touches to paint: soften edges, develop her eyes, clean up the nose of her pony among a few other things, but it is nearly finished.

"Hydrangeas & Lemons" SOLD

8"x8" oil on linen gallery-wrapped canvas painted from life in the Alla Prima fashion SOLD

This sweet little still life was begging to be painted after a long day of painting en plein air.  My hostess had this beautiful pitcher of hydrangeas sitting on her kitchen counter near the window, and I painted this as the sun set outside under natural lighting.  As this painting progressed, I found I couldn't see the color in the values anymore, so I had to stop here.
I like how it turned out despite my race against the clock to get it down before dark.

"Laundry Day" SOLD

9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel painted Alla Prima & En Plein Air
on location in Rockville, SC  sold

It was a very sunny day and we were painting in the shade of massive oak trees so I saw a lot of dappled sunlight on top of roofs and background items.  In order for the background (house) to remain in the background, I must diminish the importance of the warm tones and contrasts.

"Morning Marsh"

9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel
painted en plein air, alla prima, on location in Coastal Charleston South Carolina.
available at www.haganfineart.com

We couldn't have asked for a finer day to paint outside.  The weather was perfect!!  It is always so wonderful to be able to share the love of plein air painting with like-minded artist friends.  Missed those who couldn't be there with us today (and love and appreciate when nearby artist-friends ride up on their golf carts to show off their "precious cargo!")
Today, one of our regular painters took time off from painting with us today in order to make time as she played host to her visiting son, daughter-in-law and new 3 month old granddaughter.
They stopped by to introduce us to that beautiful baby and her daddy.
Words cannot describe how beautiful this baby is!  Leslie, She stole my heart!!

"Oyster Cove"

11"x14" Oil on Linen Panel

What initially drew me to this place was how the low tide reveals such beautiful color and texture transitions in the pluff mud.  Additionally, the low tide reveals oyster clusters and beds.  The rocks made statements of their own until the water covered them all back up again.

If you'll notice, in the back, just under the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, there is a sweet little cove tucked away from all the boat traffic to our left (out of the frame).

PS- If you look closely, you'll note the many "no-see-ums" caught in my paint. . proof positive of a painting painted out-of-doors. I'll have to allow it to dry down and brush them out (ha!).

"A Gem of a View"

6"x8" Oil on Linen Panel

Today's Plein Air Painting isn't even dry yet and I am posting.  This was the second one of two that were painted this morning.  I may go back into it and work it. . . but for now I must "Look Away!"
