"Jazz Encore" SOLD

My husband blessed me with an enchanting night out for my birthday and to also celebrate our Wedding Anniversary at the Charleston Grill where you may dine while being serenaded by a most talented group of musicians.  My youngest sister is a fan of Billy Holiday (a portrait of her hangs behind the bassist) and I wanted to snap an image to show her.  

The image became this painting's inspiration!

While hosting family, we walked around downtown Charleston, SC; we entered the Circular Church's graveyard as the spring blossoms decorated the yard. . . I looked up toward the beautiful, clear, blue sky and saw this magnificent sight!  Now you see it as a painting!

A lovely artist friend of mine invited me to paint at her Rockville SC home which is filled with charm and beauty at every turn.  We set up this still life early in the morning on her front porch and got straight to work. . . the golden morning sun was rising and glowing . . .  this is one of the results.

"Searching For Sunshine" SOLD

As I was setting up to paint this still life, the sunflowers seemed to be searching for the sunshine behind them.  And even as I painted, because I put fresh cuts on the stems (which promotes better water delivery), the entire bunch (greens and all) "moved" during the time I painted them.  They were "stretching" as they "awoke." This was a lot of fun to paint!

It was a foggy morning and I really wanted to get outside to paint on this day.  Historic Summerville has a sweet square dating back to the early 1800's.  Charm galore!!  I'll be back to paint some more.

"In The Spotlight"

I arrived at Shem Creek ready to paint as the sun was rising and found that the sun only cast its light on this little white boat putting all else around it in shadow.  

I love how it seemed to be "picked out" to shine, hence, the title.

"Family Tree"

This century-old Oak is so large that just one of its branches would be a large tree in and of itself. 
While I developed this painting I imagined the things witnessed by this "ages old" giant. 
This behemoth survived numbers of hurricanes, wars, and hot South Carolina summer heat. 
In fact, those hardships strengthened this tree to future tough events. 
The strength it developed through its own hardships also
provided places of refreshing and protection.
It was the playground to a family of 9 children. 
These branches magically transformed into imaginary ladders leading to the high dive for a long-awaited jump down into the cool tidal creek below after
long hours in the hot summer sun working the farm.  And then in the evening hours, those branches became theater seats for the 9 siblings to enjoy yet another magnificent lowcountry sunset.
Just as this tree survived many untold hurricanes and troubles throughout the years and decades, the family who grew up under the shadow of these branches has overcome untold troubles and are each stronger and better because of them.
The children are now grown and have raised families (and grand-families) of their own.  Some have gone on and some remain, but what continues is the strength and resilience that provide the kind of memories which develops their own "Family Tree."

"The Porter's Lodge at the College of Charleston" SOLD

The day started out to be a beautiful, cloudless sunny day; a real nice change from the cold grey, dreary weather we have been experiencing the previous few days.  

With all the spring blooms in full force, I had to get myself downtown to paint the oak tree-lined streets at the College of Charleston.
To me, the shapes of the shadows lacing across the street is so quintessential Southern charm.  

As it is I am pleased with the result.  

Despite the sunshine (I was painting in full shade), I would have stayed longer but the chilly breeze made it difficult to feel my hands to paint,
so I made all the necessary notations and snapped a couple of shots and finished it up in the
Hagan Fine Art Gallery & Studio as a demo where it sold.
