"Morning Tidal Creek"
This was indeed a beautiful morning to paint the rising tide of this quiet tidal creek. The sun was warm and the air was still cool and relatively "dry" for the Lowcountry in April. "Morning Tidal Creek" is an 8"x10" Plein Air Oil on Gessobord panel and is available at https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3119090#/
"Peaceful Feeling"
"Peaceful Feeling" is a plein air painting I painted while on Sullivan's Island SC near Station 26 on the Creek side of the island. "Peaceful Feeling" is a 9"x12" plein air oil painting on Belgian linen panel and is available for $600 at https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3119091#/

"Family Tree II" sold
"Family Tree II" 20"x24" Oil on Belgian Linen Panel sold
This is a specific commission of the larger version for one of the children
whose family owned this farm and this tree.
She requested that I include the plank of wood that the children used to climb up into the tree and remembers the trepidation she had traversing it way up over the marsh below.
As the owner of this reminisced, she recalled working the farm with her siblings long before the sun awoke. When midday made it too hot to work,
her father would allow them a break to play and be shaded in these branches.
During times when the tide was high, they would jump into the cool
water to be refreshed until work had to resume.
In the evenings, after the hard work was ended, the 9 children would climb back into the arms of this tree to watch the last display of color and light as the sun dipped below the horizon.

The Lowcountry skies are spectacular all throughout the day, but the later the better for dramatic cloud formations. This year has been great for capturing on canvas fantastic clouds!

"Shem Creek Studio"
8"x6" Oil on Linen Panel board, painted en plein air, alla prima, while on location
One of my dear artist friends with whom I paint is lucky enough to call this little red-roofed cottage her Artist's Studio. The invitation to paint this sweet, quirky iconic Shem Creek shack produced this little guy.

Playing Catch Up! New & Old Paintings
My apologies that I haven't posted my Plein Air Paintings lately. . . 2016 is proving to be a very busy year so far!
The following images are paintings I have painted in various locations around Charleston, SC. One painting is an (unfinished) interior painting from a cold day in February of my friend's beautiful new home. In fact, all of these are "sketches" that are each "unfinished" and those I plan to go back into to finish up. I'll repost as I complete each one.
Thanks for your continued faithful following of my blog and painting posts.
"Creek's Low Tide" 9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel, painted en Plein Air, Alla Prima, on site at the boat landing at Station 26 on Sullivan's Island, SC
I can't wait to finish the lower right corner of this piece. . . I really enjoyed painting this one. It is titled, "New Sanctuary" 9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel, painted on location and all at once (Alla Prima) in my dear friend's new home. . . the sweet peace that you feel in here is so evident and it was my hope that I captured the atmosphere here. The interior's cool, fresh, calm tones against the warm sunlight coming in through the windows captured me! I'll be sure to repost when I complete this painting!

Painted from one of my favorite plein air painting sites on Sullivan's Island, SC. It is so calm and so serene at this location. The silence is almost deafening.

These little shorebirds are so cute (and so quick making it difficult to catch on camera!). Each time I visit the beach, I remember to keep the camera or iPhone handy just in case!

"Sanderling Swoop" SOLD ON ONE KINGS LANE
8"x10" Oil on Linen panel SOLD
The kids and I spent an afternoon on Sullivan's Beach at high tide and while playing in the waves a flock of little sanderling birds flew by inches above the water. I had to paint that scene! Part of the Shore Birds Series.

Briar's Creek has such lovely vistas to enjoy. This song "Finally Home" has harmonies that make me feel as refreshed as I do when I paint on tranquil locations like this.

"Sleep Away" Bob Acri SOLD
9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel Sold
This time of year brings dryer air and cooler breezes along with the strong, warm sunshine. If you happen to be under the shade of the trees (or a boat dock, as in this case) you could easily be lulled off to dreamland on days like this one. Listening to Bob Acri's piano soothes me too.
