"Treasured Times"

Using my Grandmother's French
Haviland's Autumn Leaf china and
a Silver Tea Set, this still life came about.

From a time when people slowed down to catch up and hospitality meant getting out the fine china to entertain a guest stopping by; our world has evolved to a lifestyle that makes "unplugging" a difficult task.

"Hydrangeas and Lemons"

"Hydrangeas and Lemons" 12"x9" Alla Prima Oil on Canvas panel available here: https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3309852#/
Thanks to my wonderful Artist friend, Madeline Dukes https://madelinedukes.com/ for inviting me to join her in her studio to paint.
This was painted Alla Prima from Life.
Before starting, Madeline wandered into her beautiful and bountiful property and picked a few Hydrangeas and Lime boughs which inspired this little still life.

"Reaching Out"

"Reaching Out" 9"x12" Alla Prima Plein Air Oil on Gessobord Panel available at:  https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3306533#/
This particular day I was joined by Artists Elizabeth Middour http://www.elizabethmiddour.com/   and Janie Ball http://janieballpaints.com/
This painting day was P E R F E C T.  The air was cool and dry but the sun kept you warm and cozy.  There were no bugs biting.  Egrets and Herons and Ibis were showing off.  I wish I could have bottled this day.

"Reaching Out" was so fun to paint.  Anyone who paints with me knows how I am constantly drawn to large oak trees and their complicated, beautiful organic shapes.  I had to stop at this point in my painting as I found myself "chasing the sun."  Chasing the sun is a term plein air artists use to describe when their initial inspiration has changed a bit due to the moving sun.  The sun affects the shadow shapes and light patterns.  When I started this, the entire trunk of the tree was silhouetted against the bright creek bed behind it.  By the time I decided to put this aside, the sun illuminated the middle of the oak (which I actually prefer).  "Happy Accidents."

I've got a LOT of catching up to do!!!

Hey All!  Thanks for hanging with me. . . As some of you may or may not know, Hurricane Dorian has us a little bit on edge here on coastal South Carolina.
But we are eternally optimistic!

For your convenience, you may click HERE to see WHAT'S NEW with ny work.  I am a bit behind in posting some of my latest Plein Air Paintings but as soon as this Hurricane threat goes away I will update this blog with new work.

I hope you all enjoyed a lovely, fun, family-filled, barBQue'd & RESTFUL Labor Day!!!  Know I am always here thinking of you and hope you find yourself well and safe.

God bless you and if He leads you to do so, please pray for those affected by this record-breaking storm.  Bahamas come to mind.

With love,
Mary

"McClellanville Cottage"

McClellanville Cottage by Mary Hoffman Oil ~ 12 x 12

I really enjoyed painting this 12"x12" plein air Oil on Belgian Linen Panel while I visited a sweet, historic coastal town north of Charleston, McClellanville, SC.  This one sold as a Mother's Day gift and is being enjoyed by the owner of this home.  Sold

"Morning Tidal Creek"

This was indeed a beautiful morning to paint the rising tide of this quiet tidal creek.  The sun was warm and the air was still cool and relatively "dry" for the Lowcountry in April.  "Morning Tidal Creek" is an 8"x10" Plein Air Oil on Gessobord panel and is available at https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3119090#/

"Turquois Hull"

"Turquois Hull" is a 12"x9" Plein air oil painting I painted at Shem Creek.  As soon as I posted this one on Instagram it sold immediately.  I just love the newly painted hull of this sweet sailboat.

"Berries on a Quilt"

While plein air painting with a friend, she brought fresh strawberries for me to enjoy which she picked while visiting the mountains the day before.  We both agreed that they were so beautiful and colorful in their little turquoise basket that we had to paint them!

"Berries on a Quilt" is a sweet little 8"x10" plein air painting (painted outdoors from life) oil on Belgian linen panel SOLD at https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3119089#/

"Peaceful Feeling"

"Peaceful Feeling" is a plein air painting I painted while on Sullivan's Island SC near Station 26 on the Creek side of the island.  "Peaceful Feeling" is a 9"x12" plein air oil painting on Belgian linen panel and is available for $600 at https://maryhoffmanfineart.com/workszoom/3119091#/

Sunrise, Sunset. . .

Over an hour and a half before sunrise, I drove down to Edisto Island's beach to capture
(plein air paint) the rising sun.

One more time I drove down to Edisto Island to paint the glorious sky but this time it was to paint the setting sun.  The colors were simply sublime!

Wedding Event Paintings - Love is in the Air!

 It is always Wedding Season!

This is a beautiful wedding (unfinished, but well on its way) which took place at a very exclusive property on the Ashley River called Runnymead.  Neighboring the historical plantations and gardens up and down the Ashley River in West Ashley SC, this site boasts historical ruins of its own with river views and grand oaks that can shade up to an acre of land!
This is a stunning location for a wedding.

Another beautiful location to capture a wedding on canvas, and this one is truly exclusive; is the back yard of the Groom's parents home!  This stunning location also has river views behind which the sun sets in glorious technicolor!!  I just love my job!!

"Portrait of Richard" (being very patient!)

27"x25" Black & White Conte on Grey Canson MiTentes Paper

As an example for a Basic Drawing Class I am currently teaching,
I needed a model to pose for me. . . Richard willingly sat and did so very well.
