"Morning Bouquet"

14"x11" Oil on Linen Panel

A lovely artist friend of mine invited me to paint at her Rockville SC home which is filled with charm and beauty at every turn.  We set up this still life early in the morning on her front porch and got straight to work. . . the golden morning sun was rising and glowing . . .  this is one of the results.

"Rich History (The Charleston Library Society)" SOLD

9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel

The light filtered through the trees onto the steps of this historic and beautiful building always attracts me to paint.  This was done this spring as you can see the bright red Japanese Maple glowing around the corner of the building.

"Searching For Sunshine" SOLD

As I was setting up to paint this still life, the sunflowers seemed to be searching for the sunshine behind them.  And even as I painted, because I put fresh cuts on the stems (which promotes better water delivery), the entire bunch (greens and all) "moved" during the time I painted them.  They were "stretching" as they "awoke." This was a lot of fun to paint!

"Preserving The Past"

8"x10" Plein Air Oil on Gessobord brand panel

It was a foggy morning and I really wanted to get outside to paint on this day.  Historic Summerville has a sweet square dating back to the early 1800's.  Charm galore!!  I'll be back to paint some more.

"In The Spotlight"

10"x8" Plein Air Oil on Linen Panel

I arrived at Shem Creek ready to paint as the sun was rising and found that the sun only cast its light on this little white boat putting all else around it in shadow.
I love how it seemed to be "picked out" to shine, hence, the title.

"Family Tree"

48"x60" Oil on Linen Canvas

This century-old Oak is so large that just one of its branches would be a large tree in and of itself.
While I developed this painting I imagined the things witnessed by this "ages old" giant.
This behemoth survived numbers of hurricanes, wars, and hot South Carolina summer heat.
In fact, those hardships strengthened this tree to future tough events.
The strength it developed through its own hardships also
provided places of refreshing and protection.
It was the playground to a family of 9 children.
These branches magically transformed into imaginary ladders leading to the high dive for a long-awaited jump down into the cool tidal creek below after
long hours in the hot summer sun working the farm.  And then in the evening hours, those branches became theater seats for the 9 siblings to enjoy yet another magnificent lowcountry sunset.
Just as this tree survived many untold hurricanes and troubles throughout the years and decades, the family who grew up under the shadow of these branches has overcome untold troubles and are each stronger and better because of them.
The children are now grown and have raised families (and grand-families) of their own.  Some have gone on and some remain, but what continues is the strength and resilience that provide the kind of memories which develops their own "Family Tree."

"The Porter's Lodge at the College of Charleston" SOLD

8"x10" Plein Air Oil on Linen Panel  SOLD

The day started out to be a beautiful, cloudless sunny day; a real nice change from the cold grey, dreary weather we have been experiencing the previous few days.
With all the spring blooms in full force, I had to get myself downtown to paint the oak tree-lined streets at the College of Charleston.
To me, the shapes of the shadows lacing across the street is so quintessential Southern charm.
As it is I am pleased with the result.
Despite the sunshine (I was painting in full shade), I would have stayed longer but the chilly breeze made it difficult to feel my hands to paint,
so I made all the necessary notations and snapped a couple of shots and finished it up in the
Hagan Fine Art Gallery & Studio as a demo where it sold.

"Early Risers" SOLD

9"x12" Oil on Linen Panel sold

Fresh off the easel.  During a sunrise walk on the beach,
I noticed a lot of activity with the birds. . . they were waiting for breakfast too.
The calm seas and rich morning colors were too tempting not to capture for a painting.

"Porter's Lodge (Entrance to the College of Charleston's Cistern)" Plein Air version/first application

8"x10" Plein Air Oil on Linen Panel

The day started out to be a beautiful, cloudless sunny day; a real nice change from the cold grey, dreary weather we have been experiencing the past few days.
I had to get myself downtown to paint the live oak tree lined streets at the College of Charleston.  Hopefully, I will paint back into this to formalize the shapes of the shadows lacing across the street and up onto the sidewalk and building front.
As it is I am pleased with the result.

"Camellias & Lemons Still Life"

12"x9" Oil on Gessobord brand Panel painted from life

Painting with other artists is such a high privilege for me, especially when they come to my studio!  We set up this freshly picked bunch of flowers and lemons for a couple of hours of paint-fellowship.  What a treat for me!

"Portrait of Madeline in Action"

12"x9" Oil on Linen Panel painted from life in action

A friend invited myself and one other to her studio to challenge us to paint each other painting the other all in a circle.  Above is an example of what I painted.

Natalie painted me painting Madeline.  Here is her rendition (which is quite impressive as she has never attempted anything like this before):

I'm quite flattered. . . and I love her ability to paint fabric.  She is really very talented.  Madeline's was exquisite, but I neglected to get an image of her painting of Natalie.
This was a very fun and challenging exercise.
