I love the primary and secondary colors represented here: First, the yellow out-building, then the turquoise-y dinghy at its side; Next, the red car peeking out from behind the building and the blue tarps covering the other end. In addition to all this, there is the orange-y rust of the old tin roof which is surrounded by the green trees. As my friend Anne said, the bright, clear colors of this scene are so reminiscent of the Bahamas.

Although my father lives in a "suburban" area, he is also surrounded by farmland and untouchable green space. This painting reminds me of a scene I often see when I visit him.

His property is located on a bluff which overlooks a Nature Preserve. Beyond his backyard down the short, steep bank below, is a beautiful creek.

In Summertime, you cannot see the Creek through the thick, lush foliage of trees, but you can hear the soft rushing sound of it traveling over fallen branches and rocks. In Autumn, the creek often is dry but the falling orange, red and yellow leaves allows a peak below.

Winter holds promise of a snowey sight. Spring is lush with new color and plenty of water rushing by. I should do a "Four Season" theme with this!

This is the painting I did today (8-25-10)

This painting was painted Alla-Prima and I haven't touched it yet. I will have to "live" with it a couple/three days and look at it again to see if there is a need to retouch. But as for now, I am pleased.

This location is "The Wreck" at Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. I posted an earlier painting of the docks at the Wreck with a full description of what the Wreck is. . . This is just to the left of the building that I painted last time. This place offers myriads of vignettes from which to create a beautiful painting.

This was the second painting that I did during the "Quick Draw" on the last day of the Plein Air Paint Out. I really loved how the light twinkled in between the trees back in the back. This was actually painted on the grounds of The Village Green in front of the Post Office. This is what you see as you drive out from picking up your mail.

I was at Stillwater Farm on top of a high hill looking out over the tree tops below me to see the magnificent cloud formations and distant mountain. I wish I knew which mountain that was. But regardless, the view was breathtaking. I love this place!!

This was one of my "Reserve" paintings which means that I held it back until the final day to be judged by the Paint Out's Jurer.

It was sold soon after I placed it on the wall.

I stood on the small bridge which crossed this babbling brook. Back inside the wood you can see a small waterfall; and the sound was heavenly. It was hot there during the day and the cooling water of this brook refreshed me as I painted.

I was actually about to "close up shop" for this day's painting; all ready to head toward the car and pack up when I looked up and saw how the sunlight was back-lighting the edges of these trees against the cool (almost "cold") backdrop of distant trees. "WOW!" was my reaction and I knew I wasn't yet finished for the day.

This was actually my morning painting today. The following post is this afternoon's painting. It was still cloudy when I painted this piece. Sometimes it's the rain that drives us indoors to paint a still-life instead of painting en Plein Air;

Sometimes it's the oppressive heat. Today it was both.

This morning we set up this glass bowl filled with water & rocks on a glass table top. The reflections were incredible and challenging. As I painted this one, the sun came out revealing even more beautiful reflections on the glass top table and inside the bowl. "Editing" is the name of the game today.

This was the first of two paintings that I painted during the 3-hour "Quick Draw" event Saturday July 17th.

This day finalized the glorious week of painting for the First Annual Cashiers Plein Air Paint Out. I was unable to photograph every painting I produced, but if the organization makes available what they catagorized, I'll see about posting those.

I have been preparing for my first Plein Air Paint Out event in Cashiers North Carolina. This is a juried event in which 19 other National Plein Air Painters are participating to raise charitable monies through the Plein Air paintings' sales. The Main Event Charity Fundraiser will be held the evening of Friday July 16. Saturday July 17 is the "Quick Draw" competition in which I will be a part. Join us in the cool North Carolina mountains and cheer your favorite artist on! Fresh paintings will be available all week from Monday July 12 through Friday at the main event as well as Saturday afternoon after the quick draw.

What an interesting facade. The elements which attracted me to paint this - aside from the fact that it is an historic site - were the juxtaposition of the arcs and curves with the upright and linear planes of the building.

In addition to these elements, I love the organic shape of the palm tree and the street made of river rocks against the strong structure of the buildings.

I always loved this little corner (also at the intersection of Broad Street and East Bay). It has a quaint "European" feel. I especially loved how this tree twists as it grows.

As my friend, Leslie, stated when she saw it, "every artist deserves a "red dot." For those who may not know, a red dot indicates a "sold" painting.

Painted En Plein Air on site at the beach in front of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. I love the little path that travels up the hill to the plateau above. Beyond the trees is the ocean and in front of the rocks, the tide was coming in. By the time I was finishing up this painting, water was beginning to surround these rocks. I also love how the windswept trees lean as if frozen in space; directed by the constant ocean winds.

Leslie and I met an aspiring artist who sat on a rock drawing just left of field in my painting. She was drawing and painting the rocks from the opposite view with Downtown Charleston off in the distance. Great meeting you, Linda and your husband, Phil! Hope to see you down painting again one day!

I included this painting in the "Charleston Churches" series because of this Bed & Breakfast's reputation for being a premier Honeymoon spot in Charleston.

It was originally built by a Bride's father as a Wedding Gift. The house's architecture is reminiscent of a Wedding Cake and it is just beautiful. It is surrounded by trees and bushes which secludes, and secures it from the busy touristy street corner on which it is located. I had my chance at peeking in when I found this gate open on the side of the property. You can see the beautiful color with which the gardeners plant the grounds. You can see the tranquil scene within the property. What a beautiful place to Honeymoon!

If you'll check earlier posts from my drawing series a few years back, you'll find one drawing entitled "Contemplation" drawn from life.

I had painted this "abstract" painting from an earlier era (smile) in my life; and just wasn't satisfied with it. As I stood before it, I saw a figure coming forth and it reminded me of my earlier drawing. So I simply combined the two and I like it now.

I may need to rephotograph this as well. . . there is a shine from the wet paint. But this was painted at the beach in front of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. One can see in the far distance part of the new bridge which crosses the Cooper River into Downtown Charleston.

This is the same creek on Kiawah at Vanderhorst but looking in the opposite direction as the a.m. painting. After lunch, I got back out there and realized the low tide had revealed the "craggy" muddy sides of the creek. What an interesting texture. I loved the curl of the creek and the bumpy surfaces of the mud and oysters . . . had to be painted!!

For the past 14 years, Anne's sister, Beth, has a group which meets each year on Kiawah to study under a notable artist. In the middle of this year's, instructor Christoph and the group, graciously invited me to paint today. This was the a.m.'s result. Unseasonably cool, but sunny and beautiful! No bugs! I couldn't have been more blessed by the invite!!!

The vantage point of this painting is from up high on the hill looking down toward the path which will take you to the sandy beach below. You can see the rocky boulders that help maintain the beach's integrity from being washed out to the ocean. Beyond this is a row of beach front homes tucked in along the wind-blown trees.

There is a cozy little Restaurant named "The Wreck" the result of Hurricane Hugo wrecking a local family's shrimping business. Instead of re-instating their shrimp business, they built around their wrecked boat and started a quaint seafood restaurant affectionately known as "The Wreck."

You have to know where it is located to find it. As far as I know they do not advertise; it's all word of mouth. A local eatery that has no frills. Candle light is the only light to eat by; the kitchen has the only electricity. The tables are rope spools. Butcher paper is your table cloth and you dine with paper plates and plastic ware. It is the food as well as the charming simple atmostphere that keeps you coming back.

This painting exemplifies one of the views you'll see from your open air, dock-side table.

This particular view attracted me because of the tree's organic form and shadows blending into the boxey structure of the building. The pylons and shrimp boats break up the horizontal shapes well. I also love the rocky shore line and the reflections of the structures in the water below.

This is a larger version of a 10"x8" I painted En Plein Air a few years back and always wanted to make it into a larger painting.

Lately, I've been "into" Oak Trees. The Oaks found in the region where I live are so beautiful and gnarly and figurative. They have a "movement" all their own. They are really crying out for my attention so I have started a series called "The Oaks of Righteousness" series.

What drew me to paint this was not only the "key hole" that the trees themselves made down the end of this path, but their cast shadows as well. The patterns across this crushed oyster path were so beautiful! It begged to be painted.

I love the "tunnel" created by the large Oak Trees in this park... They almost look as if they are reaching out to give a hug. I liked the organic shapes of the trees in contrast next to the newly renovated Band Stand.

What a glorious day to be out painting!
