Ever since my daughter was about 2 or 3 years old, she's collected balls of various types: super balls which she refers to as "bouncy balls," tennis balls, footballs, the kind of balls that you squeeze to enhance your grip or reduce your stress, etc.

Now my almost 2-year old son is also a fond collector of anything that bounces. I found a few of their collection and put them in front of a window and I loved how the sunlight illuminated the almost translucent "Super balls." They look like oversized marbles in the light! So with this painting, I played with the variety of opaque and semi-translucent colorful balls. This is the first of my Abstract Series. I am very impressed with the figure and how it stretches and moves. Often when painting abstracts my inpiration is derived from either landscapes or the human form. Two of God's greatest creations!

Obviously, this painting was influenced by Mark Rothko (Marcus Rothkowitz); one of my very favorite color theorist and emotive/intuitive painters.

This was painted standing on the very site of one of my earlier subjects: The Boat House (see "River Boat House" June 25, 2010 & "The Old Boat House" Sept 15, 2007).

The location is on the Creek side of Sullivan's Island, SC looking back toward the houses inland. If you'll go to those other posts, imagine me standing on the back side of the boat house looking down the creek.

I was especially taken by the wonderful shapes made by these pines sticking up above the house and tree line. The clouds were magnificent this day!

Although it was still hitting around 90 degrees I never broke a sweat due to the lower humidity. The breeze was cool and constant and the cool shade of the porch-part of the boathouse from which I painted made it very comfortable. It was a dreamy day to paint.

This was the second painting of the day at the Boat House location.

A fantastic story: as I was painting this we all heard an enormous commotion in the water to our left and saw what we thought was a whale!!

It turned out to be the largest manatee any of us had ever seen! It must have been a bull. It was HUGE!

It's a rare thing to see a manatee in our brackish waters but every once in a while one is spotted. This sight was simply the cherry on top of our perfect Sun Day (sundae; get it? ha ha ha)!

All right. I'll leave the comedy to the comedians!

I wanted to take a Plein Air Landscape that I did and stylize it by "pushing" the color and shapes to become more of an abstract rather than a representational painting.

As I was constructing the painting, it occurred to me that the landscape elements were like stripes wiggling across the canvas and as they went higher they became more and more "organic" in nature.

I'd like to do more of these.

The Clouds were perform-ing for me this day. They were showing off so I had to try to capture the movement!
