"Foggy Charleston Morning"

Last month, in October, I was invited to be the guest speaker and demonstrate a Still Life Painting for the Seabrook Island Artists Guild. This is the painting I painted as I spoke before a most gracious and hospitable group of artists. The experience was lovely as I was hosted by Robert and Donna LeFevre. Thanks to all at the Seabrook Island Artist Guild!
Mother Emanuel Art Auction Fundraiser Begins!
It was a very rainy, dreary day but we all arrived to begin the set-up process of decking-out the Cigar Factory on East Bay Street in Downtown Charleston. This transformation is turning this unused warehouse-like space into a rustic Urban-Chic Art Gallery in which to host Art Collectors, Musician & Choir Singers, and Artists alike.
This is the wall containing the 8"x8" originals for sale. 
Every wall is covered with gorgeous art originals by Charleston's Finest Artists!
This is only the beginning and it is already looking Chi-chic!
You must see this to believe it! It's beautiful!
Everyone is working diligently to get all the artwork up and seen!
It is almost sad to think that this event will end and all this glorious art will go from this space. . .
We may have to form another Art Event in this location soon!

"Everlasting Memorial"
This will be my donation to the fundraiser, "Artists For Emanuel".
It will be available for online auction starting November 4, 2015.
I am truly humbled by this experience and hope to bring honor to those of Mother Emanuel AME Church. They displayed their love and devotion and their faith in God with their forgiveness despite their pain.
It was Wednesday July 1st when I arrived downtown, early, to set up and paint with our Plein Air Painting group that I first saw the church since Dylann Roof opened fire on that fateful night. The Emanuel congregants exercised their true Faith and set the tone for the world when they forgave their attacker instead of retaliate. The out-pour of love and support by the Charlestonians and out-of-town visitors paying their respects was overwhelming. There are just no words to describe it; except that it was on display before my eyes in the flowers, momentos, American Flags and endless visitors paying their respects. . . . I just had to paint that. I am reminded of the story when Jesus was sitting with his host at a dinner party when all of a sudden a woman came in and broke open an alabaster jar full of very expensive fragrant perfume made of nard and poured it all over Jesus. At His feet she cried tears and used her hair and kisses to wipe and clean His feet. It made everyone in attendance angry but Jesus said she did it for His burial. [see Mark 14:3-6]
Her tribute would be an everlasting memorial to Him. What I experienced with my heart and saw with my eyes, at the "feet" of Mother Emanuel, was reminiscent of the woman's tribute.
My heart swells with pride and awe at the humanity of this special church and of the people of this City we call home.

The day that I was downtown painting with my Plein Air Painting friends, I was witness to the greatest examples of love and compassion as it unfolded before my very eyes in the people who came by to offer what they could to those of Mother Emanuel Church.

"Coastal Drama"
I started this and nearly finished it "en Plein Air" on location at Sullivan's Island station 30. I snapped a bunch of reference photos and put final touches on it when I returned to the studio.
This particular day was hot and sticky and although it was sunny, you could see by the dramatic cloud formations off shore that there was a storm in our near future.
These kind of cloudy days are so fun to capture on canvas!
"Beach Brothers"
This was a commission for a woman whose younger brunette looks a lot like my own son. . . I really enjoy painting these sweet "moments" in time: capturing little ones playing at the beach. So fun!

"Gateway"
Painted En Plein Air on location at Longitude Lane which dead-ends into Meeting Street from East Bay Street near "Rainbow Row." This is a sweet, little private drive that is home to some of the most beautiful garages and backyard gates that connect to some of the most beautiful homes in historic Downtown Charleston, SC.

"Newlyweds"
The weather was gorgeous and cool. The service (although I was around the corner from the wedding ceremony and couldn't see I could hear the entire nuptials) was so precious and pure.
The guests were gracious and fun and the festivities were memorable as the Best Man and Maid of Honor gave such heart-warming accounts of their love and friendship with the Bride and Groom.
What a testimony to these two lovely young people embarking on a new life together!

My First JOY GARDEN TOUR
Joy Garden Tour
The Joy Garden Tour is a biennial event to raise financial support for The Village Green. The tour inspires gardeners of every level of experience and enthusiasm. The Joy Garden Tour features a guest speaker event, a special patron party and garden shops with 35 vendors offering plants, garden related merchandise, unique gifts, antiques and more. The highlight is a day spent touring select and stunning private gardens in the Cashiers area. Noted Plein Air Artists will paint in these gardens with the paintings available for purchase.
I am honored to have been invited to participate as one of the 6 Plein Air Painters for this 2015's Joy Garden Tour. The following posts reveal what I painted. Enjoy!
"Come Sit With Me II"

This was my first painting I painted while visiting Cashiers NC to participate in the Joy Garden Tour. I loved the morning light highlighting this sweet vignette.
"Church of the Good Shepherd"
This lovely little historic church was the subject of my Thursday morning painting for the Joy Garden Tour. At the Sunday Jazz Brunch when this was purchased, the buyer informed me of the heartbreaking tale of a woman who lost all four of her daughters under the age of 7 to cholera while her husband had to be away for the winter.
Imagine leaving your family for work and returning 3 or 4 months later to your grieving wife who tried desperately to care for your four children, lost them to sickness and buried them herself digging through frozen earth. Imagine being that mother who faced a mother's worst nightmare alone.
My new friend who now owns this painting says that each time she comes to town she stops by to pay her respects at the monument the church set aside honoring this mother's courage and strength. It is marked by an old iron gate behind the church. There you will find the story inscribed at the site.
"Resting Among the Flowers"

This charming structure was once the guard gate to one of Cashiers very exclusive communities: Wade Hampton. It is now "retired" to the "Mountain Man Cave" property and is surrounded by lovely flowers and landscaping.
On this Thursday afternoon, I set to paint here for the Joy Garden Tour. My friends who conceived the concept for the Mountain Man Caves purchased this little building and relocated it on their property to function as an extra "community" building, affectionately known as "The Dog House." The Dog House is complete with a seating area and bathroom and allows the Man Cave owners to come and hang out together and play poker or "whatever men do in their caves."
"Meander"

This is the morning painting, the first of two paintings, I painted for the Joy Garden Tour.
The top of this trickling brook is fed by a beautiful large pond full of rainbow trout and other species of fish that "happen" to find their way into the waterway through a pipe. I'm told by the garden owner that they even find their way "out" down this little stream.
This garden was created by the owner himself and it was glorious!
This stream winds its way down under a lovely little step bridge adorned with colorful flowers in a window-type basket. The walk-way with which the bridge is connected leads the wanderer either back up into the garden (with this being the view on the way back up toward the house) or rambles away from the house toward the back of the property which leads to the golf course fairway.

This view is from the outdoor kitchen deck of the house looking down into the lower level pond out toward the back of the property which backs up to a golf course. Yes, there is access to the golf course from here. :)
This is a fund-raiser for the community's Village Green: a beautiful 12-acre facility that caters to the Cashiers community & visitors and the surrounding area.
"Rock Mountain Morning"

I painted this painting as I awoke early that Saturday morning. I noticed the clear sky was being met by the cool valley mist between the mountain tops and I quickly set to work! This was painted with a cup of coffee in one hand and a brush in the other!
